Joon-yong Park, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco, gave a lecture for the next generation leaders, NUAC SF Junior members, on the subject “The Historical Background and Stages of the Korean War, the Importance of the ROK-US Alliance” on August 17 at 5 pm via Zoom Meeting. The online video lecture was presided by Daniel Jihoon Baek, president of NUAC SF Junior members, and was held in English for students who have grown up in the United States. Despite hot weather nearing 100°F, the webinar was successfully held with a total of 55 people including NUAC SF executives, NUAC SF Junior members, and their parents.
Consul General Joon-yong Park talked about the stages and the aftermath of the Korean War and UN forces dispatch at the request of the United States. Currently, the Republic of Korea (ROK) is in diplomatic relation with United Stated on the basis of the principle of reciprocity. He also emphasized that Korea is the 7th world trade powerhouse with the United States. Korea dispatched its troops to Vietnam, Iraq and even Afghanistan at the request of the United States since 1970’s.
Following details in development of the Korean War were explained: The Han River Bridge Bombing(6/28), Nakdong River Front, Incheon Landing Operation (9/15), Recapturing of Seoul (9/28), Breakthrough of the 38th Parallel (10/1), Occupation of Pyongyang (10/19), Reaching the Yalu River (10/ 26), the Chinese involvement (October 25, 300,000), Battle of Chosin Reservoir (11/26), Hungnam evacuation (12/15-23 / 100,000 + 90,000), 1.4 Retreat (1951, Seoul abandonment), Battle of White Horse (10 /6/52), the release of anti-communist prisoners (6/18/53), and the armistice agreement (7/27/53). Although the Korean War is called a ‘forgotten war’ in the United States, it will never be forgotten to Koreans. As a result of the Korean War, the Republic of Korea and the United States formed a blood alliance. The consul general ended the lecture by revealing the fact that he is thanking the American Korean war participants every year.
During the Q&A session, Jonathan Lee, 10th grader, asked how China was able to support North Korea during the Korean War just after World War II, and Sumin Choy, 7th grader, asked how the November US presidential election would affect inter-Korean relations. Next, President of NUAC SF, John Sungwoo Choi expressed his thanks to Consul General Joon-yong Park who gave a lecture and wrapped up the event.

샌프란시스코 대한민국 총영사관 박준영 총영사는 차세대 리더인 샌프란시스코 주니어평통회원들을 위해 “한국전쟁의 역사적 배경과 과정, 한미동맹의 중요성”이라는 주제로 8월 17일 오후 5시 줌미팅으로 강연회를 가졌다. SF주니어평통 백지훈 회장의 사회로 진행된 이번 화상강의는 이곳에서 자란 학생들을 위하여 영어로 진행되었으며 100도를 넘나드는 무더위와 정전 경고에도 불구하고, 주니어 평통 학생들과 학부모, 민주평통 임원 등 총 55명이 참석하여 성황을 이뤘다.
박준영 총영사는 특히 미국의 요청으로 유엔군이 한국을 도왔던 한국전쟁의 전후 상황 뿐만아니라, 현재 대한민국이 미국과 상호주의 외교를 펼치고, 대한민국이 대미 세계 무역강국 7위, 한국전쟁이후 미국을 도와 베트남, 이라크 아프가니스탄에 파병하였음을 강조했다.
세부적으로는 6.25전쟁의 경과; 한강교 폭파(6/28), 낙동강 전선, 인천상륙작전(9/15), 서울 수복(9/28),38선 돌파(10/1), 평양 점령(10/19), 압록강 도달(10/26), 중공군 참전(10/25, 30만명) 장진호 전투(11/26), 흥남철수(12/15-23 / 10만+9만명), 1.4후퇴(1951, 서울포기), 백마 고지(10/6/52), 반공포로 석방(6/18/53), 정전협정(7/27/53)에 대해서 설명했다. 미국에서는 ‘잊혀진 전쟁’이라고 하나 우리에게는 결코 잊혀질수 없는 전쟁이고, 한국전쟁으로 인해 대한민국과 미국은 피를 나눈 혈맹임을 강조하며, 샌프란시스코 총영사관은 해마다 북가주에 있는 미군 참전용사들에게 감사함을 표하고 있다고 밝히면서 강의를 마무리했다.
질의 응답시간에 이승하(10학년)학생은 세계2차대전 이후 중국이 어떻게 6.25 당시 북한을 지원할 수 있었는지, 최수민(7학년) 학생은 11월 미국 대선이 남북한 관계에 어떻게 영향을 미칠지라는 질문을 하기도 했다. 이번 강의로인해, 주니어평통은 현 국제정세에서 한미 양국의 이익을 위해 젊은이들이 어떤 일을 할수 있는지 생각해보는 계기가 되었다고 밝혔다. 이어 민주평통SF최성우회장은 바쁘신중에도 강연을 한 박준영 총영사에게 감사의 말씀을 전하였다.
